The thermostat, not a thermometer, is meant to teach us how to react less and respond more.
Consider that for a moment. When you consider a thermostat's purpose, it is to measure temperature. There is, however, a mechanism for adjusting. so that it may respond, "Yeah, this place is too hot; I'm going to adjust and make it cooler." Otherwise, I can alter it and make it warmer if it's too cold.
A thermostat can control. A thermostat has environmental adjustment capabilities.
On the other hand, thermometers take precise temperature measurements. A thermometer will read 100 degrees if the ambient temperature is 100 degrees.
So consider that in the context of our connection with our kids. If we are continually responding to our surroundings, both we and our kids become agitated. They become irate. We agree. They become quite ecstatic. We agree.
To all of our detriment, we are continually reflecting and copying their emotions and fluctuations because we are unable to react.
We can modify responses like a thermostat. To put it another way, we teach our children how to govern. Our children see us as we adapt.
